Travis Brandwood - Jellyfish Compendium Project

Travis Brandwood is an expert aquarist, aquaculturist, and biologist who has spent over 15 years studying and breeding jellyfish. He is the founder of the Jellyfish Warehouse, a company he started shortly after high school that specializes in the sustainable aquaculture of exotic jellyfish for public aquariums and home hobbyists.

These days, our industry has LOST HIM TO SCIENCE - AND WE AREN'T SORRY!

The Jellyfish Compendium Project

In 2022, Brandwood launched The Jellyfish Compendium (often referred to as the Jellyfish Composium project), a central, free-to-use digital resource designed to document the diverse and mysterious life stages of jellyfish.

The project focuses on several core goals:

  • Documentation: Creating a high-quality photographic record of every known jellyfish species.
  • Public Education: Providing accessible, reliable information on jellyfish biology and captive care that was previously scattered or restricted to industry circles.
  • Scientific Contribution: Assisting researchers and public aquarists by filling gaps in existing jellyfish research, particularly for species that have never been photographed or successfully raised in captivity.
  • Conservation: Fostering a sense of stewardship for marine ecosystems by sharing the "ethereal beauty" and fascinating life cycles of these organisms with the general public.

Brandwood's work with the Compendium has evolved from a personal passion—sparked by aquarium trips at age 12—into a significant contribution to the "renaissance" of jellyfish culture and science. He also manages the Jellyfish Owner’s Association, an educational Facebook community of over 4,000 members dedicated to the art and science of jellyfish keeping.
